Hyundai Elantra Exhaust Rattle: What to Check on 2011-2016 Cars

Quick answer
A rattle under a 2011-2016 Hyundai Elantra is not always a bad part. Start with the cheap causes: a loose heat shield or a broken hanger. If the noise sits under the front floor, gets louder when you accelerate and comes with a rumble or black soot, the front flex pipe is the likely cause.
Match the noise to the cause
| What you notice | Likely cause | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Tinny rattle at certain engine speeds | Loose heat shield | Engine cold, gently tap the shields under the car and listen |
| Knock over bumps | Broken or stretched hanger | Engine cold, push the pipe gently and see if it hits the body |
| Buzz or rumble under the front floor, worse on acceleration | Worn flex pipe | Look for frayed braid and black soot on the braided section |
| Squeak or creak at idle | Flexible joint in the front pipe | Listen near the front pipe with the car parked |
| Ticking that fades as the car warms up | Small exhaust leak | Look for soot at the flanges at each end of the pipe |
Do these checks with the car parked on flat ground and the exhaust cold. If you need to get under the car, use proper stands, never a jack alone.

Do not remove a loose heat shield
A loose shield is tempting to pull off, but it protects the floor and nearby lines from exhaust heat. Refit or replace it instead.
If it is the flex pipe
The flex section lets the engine move without cracking the exhaust. It cannot be tightened or adjusted, so once the braid or the inner liner is worn through, it needs to be repaired or replaced. Our flex pipe repair or replace guide compares the options.
Check the engine mounts at the same time. A worn mount lets the engine move further than it should and wears a new flex pipe out early.
Check which pipe your Elantra uses
The AFECO 52560 fits the 2011-2016 Elantra 1.8L, the 2013 Elantra Coupe 1.8L and the 2014-2016 Elantra GT 2.0L with Federal emissions. California-emissions and other SULEV cars use a different pipe. The emissions label under the hood shows which one you have, and the free NHTSA VIN decoder confirms the engine size.
