Mitsubishi Outlander 3.0L Loud Exhaust: Flex Pipe or Muffler?

Reviewed 2026-11-03. Checked against the sources listed below. This is general information, not a substitute for a mechanic's inspection.

Quick answer

On a Mitsubishi Outlander 3.0L V6, a noise from under the front that gets louder when you accelerate usually points to the front flex pipe. A noise from the back, with visible rust, usually points to the rear muffler. They are different parts at opposite ends of the vehicle, so find the noise before you order anything.

Have a helper rev the engine gently while you listen from outside, with the vehicle in park and the parking brake on. Stay clear of the tailpipe and hot metal.

The flex pipe sits close to the engine. The muffler is near the end of the system.

Check the pipes too

If the muffler has failed, check the pipes on both sides of it before replacing it. Pipes can look fine outside and still be weak from rust on the inside. If the flex pipe is worn, check the engine mounts as well, since a worn mount wears a new flex pipe out early.

Both are for the 3.0L V6 only, and the muffler stops at 2013. Confirm Displacement (L): 3.0 in the free NHTSA VIN decoder. A 4-cylinder Outlander uses different exhaust parts.
